independent variable

Terms from Statistics for HCI: Making Sense of Quantitative Data

The thing that is being varied experimentally, for example distance to target, or is given by the world, for example a date. Usually shown on the horizontal (x) axis. Contrast with the dependent variable, the thing that is being measured. For example, in a pointing task experiment, the independent variables might be the size of a target and the distance to it, whereas the dependent variables would be the time to reach the target and the error rate.
